Who We Are

“Integration is not about the movement of bodies or things; it is about the movement of minds and power.”

– Leanne Nunes
Former Youth Executive Director

NYC currently serves 1.1 million students in some of the most separate and unequal schools in the country. IntegrateNYC was founded six years ago by youth leaders and an educator in the South Bronx to challenge that fact, and has grown into a city-wide force for transformation.

IntegrateNYC is a youth-led intergenerational organization developing civic leaders by bringing together students from segregated schools who build relationships across divided communities, design solutions, and advocate for the transformation of schools into integrated, equitable learning communities that honor the dignity of all. Together we address head-on the internalized, interpersonal, and institutional forms of oppression enshrined in a segregated system by developing diverse student leaders committed to challenging the institutional barriers segregation creates.

Our student-generated platform - the 5Rs of Real Integration - was created to move beyond limited ideas of desegregation into a more holistic approach recentered around equity.  We work to enact the 5Rs of Real Integration in our schools, expand youth decision-making power across our city, and practice the liberation and healing we envision in the world.

In service of that, we are supporting the launch of The Peer Defense Project, an intergenerational legal project that develops youth leaders who build legal tools to increase autonomy, institutional power, and materials resources to remedy the harms of systemic racism in schools, courts, and government. The Peer Defense Project works with youth movements in integration, youth prison abolition and youth voting rights to build legal tools for learning, listening, leading, leveraging, legislating, and litigating law.

Our Values

The student-generated values that guide our work are: Being Unprecedented; Boldness; Unapologetic Self Love; Truth; Vision For the Future

The Role

Over the past seven years, IntegrateNYC has grown significantly while transforming the field of intergenerational organizing and integration advocacy in New York City and across the country.

We are seeking a new Adult Executive Director prepared to build on the foundation of the past seven years, respond to evolving conditions in the field, and to boldly and strategically grow our impact for years to come.

The Adult ED must be a proven leader and consensus builder who is able to promote cooperation, collaboration, and partnerships while advancing the core mission: to develop youth leaders who repair the harms of segregation and build authentic integration and equity.

A successful Adult ED must be deeply knowledgeable about transformative youth development, anti-racist organizing, and the NYC department of education. They will be a strategic thinker and planner, a proactive and responsive problem-solver, and a source of stability and clarity in times of uncertainty and conflict.

Because we are an intergenerational organization focused on transformative youth development, the Adult ED will partner with student leaders to execute their role, coach youth in developing their skills and sense of power, and serve an intergenerational team (ages 13+). They will work with student Executive Directors to do all of the following:

VISION & STRATEGY:

Co-lead with the Executive Team and Program Directors to:

  • Set a progressive, visionary agenda for integration and youth leadership

  • Support the INYC mission, programs, and operations

  • Supervise staff including hiring, coaching, evaluation and adhering to personnel policies

  • Respond with clarity and thoughtfulness to conflict and unexpected events, both internal to the organization and beyond

  • Implement and enhance internal policies to ensure alignment with mission and values.

  • Model a culture of inclusion and transformation

GOVERNANCE & COMPLIANCE

Co-lead with the Executive Team and Operations Director to:

  • Serve as primary liaison to the Board of Directors, working with the Board of Directors to support organizational development, fundraising, and fiscal/legal accountability

  • Build the Board of Directors through recruitment, capacity development and retention

  • Facilitate Board and staff collaboration on the strategic direction of INYC

  • Provide regular programmatic and financial reports to the Board

  • Oversee organizational communications and brand management

  • Conduct and/or support youth in conducting interviews for digital, print and television and public speaking engagements

Who You Are

  • Committed to practicing liberation We do not live in a world that honors the dignity of every person. We are committed to building a world that has never existed. To do that, we are all in a process of learning and unlearning, expanding how we honor each other and ourselves, and experimenting toward new ways of working and being. You want to inspire, support, and be in that imperfect but vital process with our community.

  • A humble and values-driven trust builder You are willing and able to initiate, nurture, and sustain authentic relationships within the organization and externally. You are a clear, compelling, and empathic communicator across differences. You have experience understanding of the motivation and agendas of diverse stakeholders which you use to facilitate inclusive and collective decision making. You can change your mind when presented with new input and seek out outside experts when a challenge calls for it.

  • Transformative developer of youth (9-24) You are comfortable with and excited to intentionally build relationships with youth where they feel seen, supported, and challenged to expand in the ways that are important to them. You have developed rigorous practices - including differentiation - to support individual youth and groups of youth in relationship building, skill development, and mindset shifts. Most importantly, you have collaborated with youth in meaningful partnership and understand how to combat adultism internally, interpersonally, and institutionally.

  • An energizing force  The work of transforming ourselves and our world takes tremendous energy and consistency. You are a source of that energy, and you know how to refill your own tank so you can authentically support others. Imagining a better world activates your curiosity, creativity, and visionary thinking -- and your ability to invite others into that generative space. You’ve grown organizations, programs, or initiatives by harnessing that collective energy and inspiring others through strengths-based practices.
